In the five years since the establishment of the “Falling Mountain Wind Scenic Area, or Lushanfeng Scenic Area” Pingtung County’s first county-level scenic area, the county government has connected rich historical and cultural heritage with natural landscapes to create a cultural and tourism corridor.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Mudan Incident, and the county government has launched themed tours combining ecological environments and indigenous culture. Additionally, they have organized a travel and arts industry group to explore the area and provide strategic tourism advice, allowing more people to experience the new charm of the Hengchun Peninsula through local, light travel.
The Transportation and Tourism Department of the county government says that although the Hengchun Peninsula is a popular domestic travel destination, tourists mainly flock to Kenting National Park. Considering the surrounding areas’ rich natural resources, diverse cultural communities, and the need to alleviate recreational pressure on Kenting National Park, the “Luoshanfeng Scenic Area” was established in August 2018.

t includes parts of Checheng Township, Mudan Township, and Manzhou Township. The area boasts attractions like Checheng Fuan Temple, Sichong River Hot Springs, Shimen Ancient Battlefield, Mudan Reservoir, Dongyuan Wetland, Siuhai (Xuhai) Hot Springs, Siuhai Guanyinbi Nature Reserve (Lanyu Beinan Ancient Trail), Gao’s Shrine, and the Manzhou Jiupeng Desert, forming a new tourist and cultural corridor.

The department further explains that this scenic area is also the site of the significant international historical event, the Mudan Incident, in Taiwan. It includes historical sites such as the “Japanese Ryukyu Clan People’s Grave,” “Shimazu Governor’s Monument,” “Shimen Ancient Battlefield,” and “Gao’s Shrine.”
This year, which marks the 150th anniversary of the Mudan (Peony) Incident, the county government is combining ecological environment, indigenous culture, industry, and local guide training to launch themed tours. These tours aim to create a distinctive local tourism trend, allowing visitors to experience the new charm of the area through local guides.
The exploratory activities include “Turtle Mountain Trail Ecological Explanation,” “The Legend of Lanyu in Mudan (Mudan Incident themed tour),” “Happy Prairie (Siuhai Prairie Ecological Explanation),” “Call of the Starry Sea (Night Observing Hermit Crabs),” “Bitou Prairie Explanation,” and “Bayao Bay Healing Experience,” allowing participants to experience the area’s diverse cultures and landscapes. Members include the Chairman of the Taiwan Travel Industry National Tourism Development Association, Tsai Tz-Chien, the largest travel e-commerce platform in Taiwan KKday, and travel writers.

The department says that the Luoshanfeng Scenic Area, adjacent to Kenting National Park, is also an important gateway to the Hengchun Peninsula. Integrated with Provincial Highway 26, County Roads 199 and 200, and Ping 172, it constructs a green slow travel recreational network.
The richness of the area’s tourism resources is comparable to Kenting, promoting hot spring therapy, tribal tourism, marine activities, and bicycle tourism, providing visitors with new travel experiences. Dialogue with local guides and experts can bring new opportunities for the tourism development of the area.
