Baoli Village 保力村

Baoli Village 保力村

Baoli Village is located at the southeastern tip of Checheng Township, with the largest area in the township. The Baoli Village’s development dates back to the Kangxi period and has a history second only to Checheng. It is representative of the Hakka villages in the Hengchun area.

Within its jurisdiction are Baoli Elementary School and Baoli Police Station. The villagers mainly engage in agriculture, with rice and onions being the primary crops. There are also extensive forest areas, and the Pingtung Institute of Technology’s Baoli Forest is located in the village’s Zhushhekeng.

Forest by-products include lingzhi mushrooms (靈芝屬 – Ganoderma), Chinese yam, and medicinal herbs. The village also has extensive pastures suitable for raising cattle and sheep. Occasionally, you can even see egrets leisurely perched on the backs of cows, creating a serene scene.

Due to gradual assimilation with the Minnan culture, most villagers now can’t converse in Hakka. However, many unique features of the Hakka culture have been preserved, such as ancestral halls, the Three Mountain Kings Temple, and the Baozhong Memorial Monument.

In 2000, the Baoli Village Community Museum was established, advocating for preserving cultural heritage in Checheng Township. It’s also the most comprehensive community museum for preserving Hakka cultural heritage in Baoli.
