Some time ago we wrote about the Hakka culture in the southernmost Hakka settlement in Taiwan in Baoli Village, in Checheng Township, and how Baoli residents are making the effort to shed the “Hok-ló-kheh 福佬客 “ label, and become a pure Hakka cultural village.
Baoli village is an important tourist landmark in Checheng Township, and is featured in our Checheng Tourist Guide. This time let me introduce another landmark in the Baoli village – 琅嶠客家彩繪村 “Lanqiao Hakka Painted Village.
The southernmost Hakka settlement at the border of Checheng Township, Checheng Baoli Painted Village is an effort to rescue the fading Hakka culture, local individuals recognized the crisis of cultural heritage.
They engaged Hengchun artist Liao Zongxian 廖宗賢 to create murals. Using wall paintings, he depicted themes from early life, industrial economy, traditional wedding customs, and others, weaving together the past and present. It feels like stepping into a time tunnel, conveying the Hakka spirit of ‘stubborn determination and passing down the importance of education.’
Since Baoli Village is located near the tri-service joint training base, the military was invited to participate in the painting.
After painting, the walls exude a strong sense of nostalgia and vitality.
