Tongpu Village 統埔村

Tongpu Village 統埔村

Tongpu village is located to the east of Checheng Township, near the mountainous area of Mudan Township. Along with Baoli Village, it is one of the few Hakka-dominated settlement communities in the Hengchun Valley plain.

The Tongpu village is home to the Tongpu Township Childcare Center. The villagers are mainly engaged in farming, with rice and onions being the primary agricultural products. The An Gong Temple is the spiritual center of our village, dedicated to the deity Wen Heng Sheng Di. Originally named ‘Hengyi An Gong Temple,’ it was given this name due to the village’s affiliation with Hengchun County during its establishment. The temple actively promotes cultural and educational activities, earning recognition and praise from various sectors and officials.

Adjacent to the An Gong Temple is the village’s sports park, a spacious and open area that offers a refreshing space for visitors to relax and unwind. The park is ideal for a meaningful religious journey or leisurely visit.

The village also houses a historical site known as the Ryukyuan Clan Grave. This site holds the graves of members of the Japanese Ryukyuan clan. In 1871, a Ryukyuan trading ship ran aground on the Jiupeng coast in Mudan.

The crew members, who could not communicate with the local indigenous people upon landing in Mudan, experienced a misunderstanding that resulted in the death of over 50 individuals. This incident eventually led to the Mudan Incident.

The remains of these Japanese individuals are buried in our village. A visit to this site allows one to reflect on the historical events surrounding the unfortunate loss of these predecessors.
