Kenting Bound: From 15-Minute Traffic Lights to AI-Controlled Roads

On the 21st, the Pingtung County Government held the “Pingtung County Smart Transportation Construction Achievements and Future Development Seminar” at the Pingtung Main Library.

County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi 周春米 invited Yang Chenghan 楊承翰, the technical director of the Ministry of Transportation’s Technology Advisory Office, Chen Guifang 陳貴芳, the director of the Southern District Maintenance Engineering Branch of the Highway Bureau, and several industry, government, and academic experts to share the pilot results of smart transportation development and discuss the future transportation development in Pingtung. They hope to make transportation in Pingtung smoother through guidance and suggestions from all parties.

Magistrate Chou Chun-mi

County Magistrate Chou Chunmi said that she still remembers that many years ago, the traffic light duration at the Shuidiliao intersection was nearly 900 seconds, often causing traffic congestion.

Therefore, since 2017, the county government team has actively invested in the development of smart transportation with the support of the Ministry of Transportation to alleviate traffic congestion. She especially thanked the Ministry of Transportation for supporting the related budget and establishing a traffic management system. Through smart signal control, screen and related equipment installation, they can not only quickly understand the local traffic conditions but also effectively reduce the travel time for residents and tourists in Pingtung through signal adjustments and police traffic management.

Police Chief Tsai Wen-feng said that in recent years, through the Traffic Control Center, they have introduced a smart dynamic signal control system and completed Taiwan’s longest smart corridor.

In the future, they will continue to promote technological innovation, establish a more comprehensive smart transportation system, and also strengthen publicity and education to raise public awareness of traffic safety and jointly create a better and sustainable technological future.

Magistrate Chou pointed out that through smart signal control and the introduction of AI artificial intelligence, after years of repeated operations and enhancing system intelligence and automation, they also provide optimal traffic management and execution during consecutive holidays. For example, the journey from Checheng Haikou Road in Haikou Village, to Nanzhou Interchange can save about 40 minutes, with an efficiency improvement of up to 50%.

The people of Pingtung have well received this move and has received unanimous praise from the locals. They look forward to smoother transportation in Pingtung with guidance and suggestions from experts in various fields.

The police department stated that smart transportation is not only a technological revolution but also an important link in future urban development.

Through today’s results presentation, they witnessed Taiwan’s first and longest 100-kilometer smart corridor, connecting 170 smart intersections, saving 20% of travel time, and 141 kilometers of underground cable. They look forward to the smart application of data and technology in the future, making the city more convenient, efficient, and sustainable, and creating a safe and technological future.
