The tourism and accommodation industry in the Kenting business district of Pingtung is booming. It is also a top-tier battleground for finance, home delivery, and life insurance. The Kenting post office, once considered a ‘good neighbor’ by the locals, moved out after its 7-year lease expired and took up residence in the Hengchun post office 10 kilometers away. Residents and tourists of Kenting complained about the inconvenience.
The Pingtung post office has returned to Kenting by renting space from the Howard Beach Resort. Today, they joyfully celebrated their reopening. Some stamp collectors made a memorable trip to collect the exclusive commemorative stamp from the southernmost post office in Taiwan.
The Hengchun Kenting Post Office was established in March 1993 and was initially located next to the McDonald’s on Kenting Street. At that time, the Kenting tourism industry was taking off, and accommodation providers became the main deposit and exchange services clientele. Coupled with postal, home delivery, and life insurance services, it was a ‘good neighbor’ that the locals relied on.
After the 7-year lease expired, due to the area’s booming tourism and accommodation industry, real estate in the main street business district became incredibly valuable, causing rents to multiply several times. Finding a new location became challenging, so they moved to share office space with the Hengchun Post Office.
The Kenting Business District Development Association stated that the business district includes hotels, guesthouses, related food and beverage providers, and merchants. In the past, due to having a local service point, many became loyal customers of the post office. They could conveniently handle deposit and exchange services, and tourists were delighted to send postcards or souvenirs.
However, 7 years ago, after relocating to the Hengchun Post Office, they lost the advantage of a favorable location. Moreover, banks with branches in Hengchun Town competed for customers, and the home delivery and life insurance businesses were also taken over by others, leading to a gradual loss of customers.
The post office plays an integral role in the lives of the locals, offering fast, safe, and reliable services. It is a trusted neighbor that everyone relies on, and the community hopes for its return to Kenting.
‘Small as a sparrow, but it has everything!’ said Xu Xinren 許信仁, the head of Pingtung Post Office. The Kenting Post Office is the southernmost post office in Taiwan and the only one in a five-star hotel. It is closed on Saturdays and Sundays, but later offers automated services for sending parcels and express home deliveries. Currently, the post office is staffed by three people.
