The name “Houbihu” comes from the sluice lake area on the east side of the channel, which appears as a sluice lake during low tide, similar to the “backyard lake” for residents in the Daguang Village. Hence the name “Houbihu.”
Houbihu has the largest fishing harbor in Hengchun and the largest yacht dock, capable of accommodating 120 yachts. The highest catches of sailfish, marlins, swordfish, and black marlins occur from April to July, while from October to March of the following year, catches of black marlin and white marlins are at their peak. Whenever fishing boats return with their fresh catches at dusk, it’s common to see local residents and tourists eagerly purchasing seafood, creating a lively scene.

Due to the fresh supply, the sashimi made from freshly caught fish is both high quality and reasonably priced. There are extensive coral sand beaches in the high tide zone, with a tidal width of about 30 meters. These beaches are Twin Tower Beach, Star Sand Beach, and Little Bali Beach. Water activities such as snorkeling, semi-submarines, and water towables are very popular.

When diving in this area, entering and navigating the waters is quite straightforward. The seabed slopes gently downward, with a mainly fine sandy bottom. Beginners should be cautious not to stir up the water, as this can reduce visibility.
Among the sandy areas, you can find patches of coral reefs, including a particularly large group of bird’s nest corals. Thanks to the efforts of divers from various places, it has become a renowned fish-feeding area. Tropical fish in this area tend to be less frightened by divers. In recent years, the establishment of the Houbihu Marine Protected Area and local conservation efforts have contributed to an increase in fish resources in this area.
The Kenting National Park Administration has set up a yacht dock here, which shares the same harbor entrance with the fishing port. Various water activities are available, such as jet skiing, sailing, parasailing, fishing, and banana boat rides.
