Stinky Tofu in Manzhou, Kenting - Taiwan

If you ever plan to go to Taiwan, be it Kenting, or just simply walk to any of night markets during your short business trip – you will sure hear, or should I say – smell Taiwanese Stinky Tofu.
As this post brilliantly explains, stinky tofu can be steamed, boiled, or stewed, and well, this is a food that every foreigner sooner or later will want to try, to be fully immersed in Taiwan’s food culture.
How can you get the best of the both worlds – Taiwanese Stinky Tofu, while still be on the wild side of Kenting – in Manzhou Township?

Just go to Xue’s Stinky Tofu 薛臭豆腐!

As we extensively discussed in another post talking about Manzhou Black Beans, and the black bean tofu, this particular (and really famous in Manzhou) tofu is not necessarily made from black beans, however, still well worth trying.

Manzhou is not a big township at all, and once you see this roundabout with an eagle in the middle (eagle is an official symbol of Manzhou) – the Stinky Tofu is just around the corner!

Interestingly enough, this place really seems to be a focal point of whole tourist traffic who lives in Manzhou or just passes by.
When we lived in Sea Shore Hotel, which is already pretty far away from Manzhou township, when we asked the boss where can we eat dinner nearby, he immediately asked “do you want to try the famous Manzhou stinky tofu?” And yes, Manzhou is not only famous for its Pangola Grass haystacks, as we learned in this post, but also eagles – and this stinky tofu restaurant.

And that means – come at busy times, especially on weekends or public holidays in Taiwan – you will NOT have a seat immediately and most likely you will need to wait for a table.

Well, here it comes – and if you are familiar with these fried stinky tofus in Taiwan, it probably looks quite the same as everywhere in Taiwan, even in Hakka heavy flavored Miaoli, – it comes as usual with pickled cabbage and garlic sauce.

If you’re visiting Taiwan, especially Taipei, it would be a disservice to leave without trying stinky tofu. It’s unique, savory, iconic and something that you’d likely wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else.
