Ecology of Shanhai Fishing Port Area in Kenting

Shanhai (山海) is located not far from Wanlitong to the south. It was formerly known as “Crab Bay” and was originally a small fishing harbor.

Later, it was expanded into a slightly larger fishing harbor. Hundreds of concrete wave breakers were placed on both sides of the port, which damaged the natural landscape of the coral reef coast.

Wave breakers, or breakwaters, serve to dissipate the energy of incoming waves, protecting coastlines, harbors, and structures from erosion and damage.

They create calmer conditions within harbors, enabling safe navigation and mooring of vessels while also providing recreational areas for activities in sheltered waters.

From Wanlitong to the south, along the coastline from Shanhai, Hongchai to the north of Baisha, most of it is a narrow coral reef coast with many tidal channels and small tidal pools.

Apart from the winter and spring seasons, when there is relatively more seaweed growth, coral growth is also near the low tide line. Although there are not many other types and numbers of marine animals, it is still considered to be a decent amount.

In Shanhai Harbor, some fishermen have switched to operating glass-bottom boats, allowing tourists to enjoy the coral reef ecosystem underwater. However, because nearby waters are still used by fishermen to catch tropical fish for sale and viewing purposes, the variety and quantity of tropical fish are limited. The focus is mainly on appreciating the types and distribution of various corals.

In spring, the rocky shore outside the breakwaters on the south side of Shanhai Fishing Harbor is covered with green algae.
