The amendment to the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, which stipulates a 6-month license suspension for speeding over 40 km/h, took effect on June 30. Drivers traveling to and from Kenting via Fangshan on Provincial Highway 1 台1線 have been caught by mobile speed cameras exceeding the 40 km/h speed limit by over 40 km/h on the 455th-kilometer southbound section of the Taiwan Route 1 in Fangshan.

To their surprise, they received not only a fine but also a half-year license suspension, significantly affecting their daily lives.
According to police statistics from July to October, out of 2,668 speeding cases, 65 were for speeding over 40 km/h, reminding road users to pay attention to speed limits.
Many drivers on this stretch have been fined for exceeding the speed limit by 40 km/h, and because of the half-year license suspension, they cannot use their vehicles, leading some to desperately ask on social networks if there is a way to avoid the suspension. The unanimous response is that they must endure the half-year.

Other “victims” have taken to the internet to share their painful experiences of both being fined and having their license suspended, noting that while speeding over 100 km/h results in a fine, exceeding 101 km/h (speeding by 41 km/h) leads to a 6-month suspension. They remind drivers passing through the southbound Dolphin Bay section of Taiwan Route 1 to reduce their speed to below 60 km/h. The speed camera, located in front of the SmallTudigong Temple, operates at random times during the day and night, and any moment of inattention to speed could result in being photographed.

The Fangliao police state that on Taiwan Provincial Highway 1, from south of Dolphin Bay in Fangshan Township to before entering Route 9, on the 454 to 459-kilometer stretch, due to the presence of large rest stops and shops, with frequent vehicle entries and exits, the speed limit is not the usual 70 km/h for provincial highways but 60 km/h.
Police have arranged random, unannounced speed checks.
According to statistics, from January to June this year, there were a total of 3,590 speeding cases. After the law amendment from July to October, there were 2,668 cases, with 65 of them exceeding the speed limit by 40 km/h, resulting in a half-year license suspension.
The law allows for a fine of more than NT$6,000 up to NT$36,000, with the maximum fine increased from NT$24,000 to NT$36,000. Offenders are also prohibited from driving on the spot, and it is stipulated that the vehicle owner’s license is suspended for half a year.
