Typhoon Doksuri brought heavy rain and torrential downpours as it hit Taiwan, with the brunt of the impact felt in Pingtung’s Hengchun Peninsula. For several days, massive waves continuously pounded the coastline, causing significant erosion and changes to the beautiful beaches of Kenting.
Today, tourists were shocked to see that the beaches had significantly receded and become smaller. The Kenting National Park Management Office explained that the massive waves from the typhoon severely damaged the beaches, causing about one-third to one-half of the coastal sand to be washed away. This is a temporary phenomenon caused by the physical action of the waves, and it will take some time for the beaches to recover from this impact.
Typhoon Doksuri waves have been continuously pounding the Kenting coastline for several days, causing approximately one-third of the popular Kenting Nanwan Beach to be washed away and disappear due to the massive waves.
"Nanwan Beach 'Shrinks' by Approximately One-Third!" According to a water scooter instructor surnamed Pan at Nanwan, during the impact of Typhoon Dujuan, the coast experienced three consecutive days of large waves, some reaching over 5 feet in height.
As a result of the prolonged assault from these massive waves, not only did the beach “shrink,” but it also brought a large amount of marine debris. Yesterday, water activity operators mobilized to clean up the trash, but the shell sand taken away by the waves won’t return in the short term; it will take at least over a month to recover.
Pan also said summer vacation is the traditional peak season for water activities in Kenting. However, due to the passage of Typhoon Doksuri, the beach has been closed for up to 4 days.
Today, the waves are as high as 1 meter, and the Kenting National Park Management Office has raised the red flag to prohibit swimming. Although motorized water activities are not prohibited, the desire of tourists to swim in the sea has also decreased. As a result, the revenue has plummeted by 80% compared to regular days. The equipment and gear blown away by the strong winds have also caused significant losses.
Today, the Kenting area enjoys fine weather, and tourists are returning to popular recreational beaches such as Baisha Beach, Sail Rock Beach, Xiaowan Beach, and Dawan Beach. However, they were shocked to find that the beaches have significantly receded and changed.
At Kenting Dawan Beach, in front of the Kenting Chateau Beach Resort, the once expansive beach has been eroded for several days by the large waves, causing nearly half of the beach to disappear.
Yesterday, it had come perilously close to the hotel’s guest room buildings. In response, the hotel had to place large sandbags for protection urgently.
Typhoon Doksuri continuous onslaught brought huge waves crashing onto the Kenting coastline, causing nearly half of the Baisha (White Sand) beach to be washed away and disappear due to the massive waves.
The Kenting National Park Management Office stated that the accompanying strong southwest winds drove the waves directly onto the shore during the typhoon.
When the waves receded, they removed the sand from the shoreline, disappearing approximately one-third to half of the beaches along the Kenting coast.
The Dawan Beach, located behind the Kenting Chateau Beach Resort, has been severely eroded by the massive waves, with nearly half of the beach washed away. The waves have come perilously close to the hotel’s buildings, prompting the hotel to place sandbags for protection.
This is a temporary physical phenomenon caused by the waves, and the sand swept away by the waves is still in the shallow water. It will gradually be pushed back to the shore over time, but it will take some time for the beaches to recover their original beauty.
