Historical Data of Xuhai (Syuhai) Hot Spring
The earliest documentation of Xuhai Hot Spring dates back to 1887 when the British explorer Taylor, accompanied by Pan Wenjie, the chief of the eighteen tribes of the Sqalu (today’s Puyuma) people, discovered a warm spring emerging from Caoshan while on his way to Taitung via the Beinan Lanyu Ancient Trail.
Before setting off, a shaman performed a ritual to bless the journey. During the ceremony, the number of travelers was counted, and an equal number of branches were used to form a circle on the ground, within which the travelers sat. The shaman stood in the center, waving a bunch of reeds over the heads of the travelers while chanting rapidly. After the chanting, pomegranate leaves were applied to objects and handed to the travelers, and ointment was rubbed on their heads as a blessing. The ritual instrument used by the Sqalu people of Zhu Lao Shu community was the ‘buladzu’, while the nearby Paiwan people of the Mosquito community used ‘dalju’ stones. The different ritual instruments imply differences in the ancestral worship and beliefs of the two groups.
