Xinjie Village 新街村

In ancient times, the place now known as Xinjie Village was called “Dongdong – 咚咚.”

It had an inner harbor near the sea and served as a docking and unloading point for ships engaged in external trade. Due to the frequent arrival and departure of ships accompanied by the sound of “dong dong,” it acquired the name “Dongdong.”

Later, as people gradually moved in, a new village began to take shape, leading to a name change to “Xinjie” (New Street).

The majority of villagers were engaged in farming, primarily cultivating rice and onions. Onions were a crucial economic crop in the village, and there’s an agricultural association-operated “Export Onion Inspection Center” for packaging and exporting onions.

The village contributes two-thirds of the national onion export volume.

Fishing also played a significant role, with about one-third of the population engaged in fishing. During farming downtime, coastal residents also caught shrimp fry, eels, and mullet fry to earn extra income, supplementing their household expenses. As a result, the traditional practice of cooperative fishing with fishing nets, known as “Qian gu 牽罟” (pulling nets), has been preserved.
